November 18:
Kremlin Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov has said that Russia “plans to continue to play an active role in developing Iran’s peaceful nuclear power sector in compliance with its appropriate international obligations,” Interfax reports. Ivanov told Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Hasan Rowhani by telephone that Russia hopes the agreement Iran reached with Great Britain, France and Germany to suspend uranium-enrichment related activities starting on November 22nd will be “implemented in full” and “help resolve the dispute surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has called in Sweden’s ambassador to Moscow, Johann Mullender, for an explanation about the opening of the Chechen separatist Kavkaz Center website in Sweden. Mullender told Itar-TASS that only Sweden’s chief prosecutor has the authority to close down a website. “Sweden welcomes cooperation with other countries in the struggle against terrorism but it wants to fight this evil within its legal framework and in compliance with its constitution with full observation of human rights,” adding that Kavkaz Center would be investigated if it “calls for violence.” Kavkaz Center was shut down several times this year, first in Lithuania and then in Finland.
Russia’s intelligence services sent a group of “Serbian terrorists” to Chechnya several months ago, United Press International reports, citing Bosnian press reports based on “sources inside the government secret services of Bosnia-Herzegovina.” The group was headed by Rajko Kusic, an associate of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic who allegedly played a prominent rule in ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and is wanted by the Hague War Crimes Tribunal for involvement in the murder of Bosnian Muslims.
